Junior Freestyle (WYYC2025)

We’re excited to introduce the Junior Freestyle division at this year’s World Yo-Yo Contest! This brand-new category is open to players aged 0–16 and offers a great opportunity for young yo-yo players to showcase their skills on the world stage.

This is your chance to compete against the best junior players from around the world and experience the thrill of a world-class yo-yo competition!

The Junior Freestyle will feature two rounds:

  • Qualification Round (Wildcard): each competitor will perform a 30-second routine to secure a spot in the finals.
  • Final Round: the top 12 players from the qualification round will advance to the finals, where they will perform a 90-second freestyle on the main stage. Competitors can compete in one of the five main styles (1A–5A), and each style will be multiplied by a specific coefficient to ensure fair scoring.

To maintain the idea of Junior division and encourage new talent, players who have competed in the finals of their national yo-yo contest are not eligible to participate in this division. (Players who have previously advanced from the preliminary round to the final round in their main division at any national contest are not eligible to compete in the Junior Freestyle.)

Competition Format for Final Round

  • Only players 16 years old or younger can compete in this event (Born on August 9, 2008 or later)
  • 90 second freestyle
  • Player may choose their own music
  • Player must choose one style among 1A-5A
  • Scoring rules are the same as 1A-5A
  • Evaluation categories will be the same as the Semi-Final Round of 1A-5A
  • We will adjust/normalize the clicker score difference among styles with a coefficient
Qualification Round

All Junior Division competitors must first compete in a Wildcard Round.

  • Same rules as WildCard for 1A-5A
  • 30 second freestyle
  • You must choose music from WildCard music library.
  • Player must choose one style among 1A-5A
  • Scoring rules are the same as 1A-5A WildCard
  • We will adjust/normalize the clicker score difference among styles with a coefficient

* Winning this freestyle event does not make the winner a “World Yo-Yo Champion.” Therefore, the contestants in this event are also welcome to compete in 1A-5A and AP to aim for a World Title.

Normalization Among Different Styles

To eliminate the difference in raw clicker numbers among different styles, we will multiply the sum of positive and negative clickers of each judge with the following values.

We will apply this adjustment before normalizing, so the highest score for TE will still stay 60.0 pts.

1A – 1.00
2A – 1.28
3A – 1.35
4A – 1.19
5A – 1.27

These values are calculated from the scores of OWYYC2022.
